Study English in New York – Vocab – Christmas Tree (#3)
This is the third word of the day for our readers, “Christmas Tree”! Happy holidays.
Christmas Tree
This is an evergreen tree (a tree that has leaves all year round) that is traditionally bought at Christmas time and decorated. Usually Christmas trees are bought about a month before Christmas and the family, particularly the children, then decorate the tree. Some traditional tree decorations are Christmas lights; tinsel (a shiny metallic string that you wind around the tree); Christmas ornaments (usually made of glass or metal, many ornaments are shaped like balls and are shiny and brightly colored, some ornaments are in the shape of angels, Santa Claus, snowflakes or snowmen); and, in America, candy canes (these are hard candy sticks shaped like walking canes with white and red stripes and usually peppermint or cinnamon flavored).
The Christmas tree tradition originally came from Germany but had spread throughout the world by the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
