Have you ever been to Japan, and want to keep up the language? How about you’ve always had an interest in learning Japanese, but didn’t know where to start? Maybe you’ve used language software or done Japanese group classes in the past, but never had the direction nor attention to develop your language skills fully?

Hills Learning offers private language lessons in Japanese for all skill levels, and all ages. Our SWIRL curriculum focuses on developing at least three of the five language skills per class. Our main goal for Japanese private lessons is to develop conversational skills, but we also specialize in test prep, cultural etiquette, or just general language acquisition. And of course, we can meet student’s individual goals and requirements.

With this basic framework, each teacher creates and develops her own teaching materials based on student needs and goals. All teachers undergo a thorough review and testing process, and also must follow guidelines and best practices from Hills Learning when creating teaching materials.

All our online private lessons are held in one of our online classrooms. Please when contacting us let us know your availability and preferences for times and days for lessons.

FAQ for Classes Online

What kind of equipment do you use to teach online classes?

Hills Learning uses Adobe Connect, a platform that has been designed for online training and has a platform that allows teachers to teach with blackboards, sharing functions, online quiz capability, and other tools. Technical support is available either from Hills Learning teachers, staff, or our partner company Clarix that works with us to offer online classes.

Why choose Hills Learning for online classes?

Hills Learning is a language school with its head branch in New York City. We’ve developed our own teaching methodology, SWIRL, which focuses on the speaking and listening components of the language. All our teachers that we hire our native speakers of their languages and are trained on our methodology.

We also offer perks for our online classes, such as access to the recording of each class after it is taught, free online language resources, and feedback forms to measure your progress and discuss your future language goals.

What kind of equipment is necessary to take online classes?

– Please click on this link to evaluate your computer’s compatibility with our online training module, Adobe Connect.

Below is what we recommend for equipment:

1 – A computer with webcam (most new computers have them built in but it’s also possible to get a separate webcam and hook that up to your computer). Each student gets their own video feed.

2 – A reliable and fast internet connection.

3 – A headset that plugs into your computer. When students sign in to the classroom, they connect their audio feed through their computer speakers. The headset is strongly recommended to take out background noise, and also enhance the online learning experience. We want our students free to type on their computers and interact with the teachers and fellow students in their classes.

What is the price difference between face to face and online classes?

The group classes online are cheaper than the face to face classes. For the private lessons, they are the same price.

How does the classroom experience differ between online versus face to face ?

First of all, we try our best to emulate the face to face experience in our online classes. The maximum amount of students allowed online is 8 students, slightly smaller than our 10 student maximum for face to face classes.

The reason why we keep the student to teacher ratio small is when learning foreign language we want the most interactive experience possible. Online, each student has their own audio and video feed, where they can ask questions and participate like a in a regular classroom. The audio feed is done through audio conferencing, a clear and reliable way to communicate online. The video is done through your computer’s webcam.

The online classes also are recorded. So just in case a student has missed a class and wants to go back and view the class we can send them the file for that missed class.
