The instructors are very good. They dont just teach in the classroom, they teach you how to teach yourself. Ive studied Japanese at different language schools in New York, university courses, as well as private lessons and by far this school is absolutely the best. The best not only for the level of instruction and student:teacher ratio but also because the school actually truthfully listens to what yout language learning goals are as well as properly assess your current language abilities to point you in the correct direction to help you achieve your language learning goals. Even pushing you in directions you thought you didnt need or werent capable of just to find that you can do it after all!!

You tell them your goals and what you want to learn and the teachers customize the lessons to fit your needs. The price of the lessons are half of what most tutoring companies are asking. In addition to great Japanese instruction, the staff goes out of their way to help you with with other things you may need relating to Japan. My tutor, as well as the director, has helped me research jobs in Japan, and write my resume in Japanese. This has been extremely helpful to me in my job search and I am very grateful to them. If you are looking for a friendly, but professional place to learn Japanese, Hills Learning is the place to go. My teacher is a native speaker who has a background in linguistics. She can give specific, clear explanations of any kanji or grammar questions one might have. The atmosphere is casual, but serious. Classes are small. The sensei corrects each student's homework nand explains errors individually.

In general I am very satisfied at this point. We have been focusing more on conversation practice in my last 4 or 5 lessons, though somehow we have also covered a good deal of grammatical material (from the teacher and from Japanese for Busy People II). The teacher is very skilled at shaping the conversation as it develops so that I feel challenged but not overwhelmed. I definitely feel more confident with my speaking ability, which makes me feel great; and I am much more comfortable with some grammar concepts that have stymied me before.

The sensei is a great teacher and she has really helped me to learn a lot of things about kanji and certain grammar points that I could have never picked up without her expertise! I really feel like I wasnt able to give Japanese my 100% attention in the first few lessons but other the past 3 or 4 weeks, I have been studying hard and hope to continue lessons until JLPT in the winter.

With strength of just 3 people, it was kind of semi-private lesson and she made sure that everyone understood everything taught in the lesson. I should also mention the consideration by Hills Learning to change the class timing. I wasn't able attend as per original schedule; but the director made an effort to switch the class to a time which suited everyone. I really appreciate it.

Even though the class was only once a week I felt like we covered a lot and got a general understanding of Japanese. I enjoyed going to each class and the teacher was patient when students didn't understand and she made it fun by making it very interactive. My favorite thing we did was translate manga pages. The class also drove my motivation to continue learning the language so I was very happy to be a part of it.

The teacher was great! I've studied many languages in many different formats and I really think that this was the quickest I've picked up an understanding of the language. If we weren't pronouncing something correctly, she would have us repeat it until it was correct and was very patient in doing so. She was also able to explain why we were having problems pronouncing such as where our tongue and teeth were placed. That was really helpful! It was also helpful to repeat the tones during every class without learning the meaning of the words so that you really focused on the tone and not remembering the word. I think the conversations that we learned were helpful for the general beginners class and the teacher told us any other phrases that we wanted to know based on why we were learning the language. She gave me tons of extra phrases for my specific job, which was awesome!

One of the things that attests to her skill as a teacher is her ease of balancing students of different skills and encouraging the student to talk around words they' can't recall. Really wonderful to have had her and wish I could take the course again!

Beginner Chinese course at their Grand Central location was wonderful. The native-speaker teacher guided our (small) class so as to keep from getting off-track too often. She also included cultural notes and was very accessible outside of class via e-mail. There was light homework, since the class was only twice a week there was plenty of time to complete it, and the only penalty for not completing it was your own detriment. She spent a lot of time on pronunciation, going around the room to give each person a chance to pronounce the words out loud, which was very helpful!!

I have been studying Mandarin Chinese with Hills learning for a year now. During that time, learning has been slow and steady. I'd say we completed about a college semester's worth of Chinese language in that time, which is a perfectly reasonable amount of progress given the limited time investment of just one 90 minute class each week (plus homework). Class sizes are small (my class has fluctuated between 2 to 5 people), which helps the teachers really focus on each student's individual needs. Speaking of the teachers, they all seem to be native speakers, which is really important for a language like Chinese, where the pronunciation can be challenging for non-native speakers. Hills Learning has also been incredibly accommodating of both mine and my classmates schedules. They've been willing to reschedule classes (when none of us could make it) and also offered pro-rated private lessons as make-up classes when I have been unable to make a session.

Personally, languages come easier to me than other subjects (for example, science or history), but I can't believe how much I've already learned. I feel as if I know a bit less Korean than Japanese, but I've taken two years of Japanese in high school! I'll definitely be looking into taking more classes here.

This is a great class. I really enjoyed the small class-setting which enables students to really interact with each other and become friends. The teacher is an enthusiastic teacher with a lot of patience. The only thing that needs to be improved is the availability of a textbook. Personally I prefer having a textbook, not only giving me the possibility to preview but also a sense of what kind of stage I am in.

The teacher embodied the warmth and kindness that I remember of the people of Thailand. Her teaching was both informative and well explained in addition to being attentive and concerned with our progress. Emails were sent with links to videos on her culture and the music video with printed lyrics expanded our learning.

I must say that the approach this school takes is very effective. It's just a very clean, straight up approach. No "gimmicks." From the very beginning, they stress importance on learning to read and comprehend and don't just teach conversational. The class sizes are very small and our teacher was a native Thai, very patient and clearly loves to teach. I've only ever visited Thailand and know a few locals there but never bothered to learn any of the language. Not even a peep. After only 9 weeks (once a week) of Beginner Thai and 4 weeks (also once a week) of Advanced Beginner Thai, I am much further along in learning this language than I ever thought possible, i.e., I am able to speak, read and comprehend at a very basic survival level. This is impressive given the nature of the Thai alphabet and of Asian tonal languages and it's also impressive in that I live in New York and cannot immerse myself in Thai culture in Thailand, although I plan to one day. Our teacher very much encouraged out-loud conversation and her patience and accessibility made it very inviting and fun to just dive in and study.

I'm extremely satisfied with the pace and the class size. Keeping it a small class allows for more personal attention in the learning process. Having someone on generally the same skill level helps bring up confidence when learning with others. I feel that the topics covered in the lessons are quite invaluable as they do have relevance in how I would use Cantonese. The instructor is patient, helpful, and provides useful asides and subtopics of discussion in each lesson. I definitely notice the change in my level of confidence and my handle on speaking in Cantonese.

This level exceeded all my expectations from a Cantonese course. It was just hard enough, I would say that I absorbed 70%-80% of the material, which is great! The teacher was highly professional, the handouts were flawless and the material was organized in a way that was both educational and accessible. I think there was a correct balance between learning new grammatical structures and learning vocabulary.

I felt that the pace of the class was good for me. I believe that the group conversation exercises were well utilized in the class. Because of this, I'm more confident in being well grounded in the material for each of the lessons. Though the dialogues - along with the supplemented audio - in the worksheet were useful, but the bigger stress on the group conversation exercises were of major help.

Very helpful! I take English private lessons. It is very helpful because of the flexibility. My teacher is always trying to understand my weak points and arranges my lessons to improve my weaknesses in the most suitable way for me.
